Service & Repair Engineer

Who We Are

CALIFIA is the gold standard in extracorporeal circulation simulation – the high-fidelity patient simulator that hospitals, universities, and the world’s leading medical-device manufacturers rely on to teach clinicians how real patient physiology behaves before, during, and after E CM O, heart-lung bypass, and ECLS. From Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic to programs across Europe, Asia, and Africa, CALIFIA is how a new gen eration of clinicians learns to make time-sensitive, life-or-death decisions safely – on a simulator instead of on a patient. Biomed Simulation is at an inflection point. Several new products are advancing through the pipeline, a capital raise is acti vely underway, and demand for the platform continues to grow worldwide. This is a rare moment to put your fingerprints on the systems that train clinical teams around the globe.

The Role

This is a hands-on, project-based engagement for a mid-level service and repair engineer who is energized by getting to the bott om of a problem. The successful candidate takes ownership of the CALIFIA repair backlog in the company’s Service & Repair Depot: receiving returned units, reproducing reported failures, running disciplined diagnostics, and isolating each root cause to hardware, software, or the communication between them – then repairing or coordinating the fix and using QA testing protocols to validate the repair before the unit ships back. Equally central to the role is what gets left behind. The engineer documents repair procedures and troubleshooting logic clearly, establishes repeatable service processes where today’s are informal, and transfers that knowledge to internal staff so the team can support repairs and ensure parts availability. In short, this role both clears the work in front of it and builds the capability that outlasts it.

Who You'll Work With

Reporting Line

This role reports to the Operations Manager, who oversees parts, supply availability, and the relationship with the company’s contract manufacturing partner in Germany. Because the Operations Manager is not based on-site, this role demands exceptional written documentation and proactive, structured communication. Repair findings, parts and supply needs, and project status must be captured clearly enough to be understood and acted on remotely, without relying on in-person conversation. Attention to detail here is not a nice-to-have – it is how the operation runs.

Founder & CTO

The engineer also works closely, as needed, with the company’s Founder and CTO – a leader with deep product history and authoritative command of the clinical and physiological behavior CALIFIA is designed to reproduce, who is not an engineer by background. The succes sful candidate is therefore self-sufficient on the engineering side: able to take his guidance on how a patient or device should behave and transl ate it into hardware and software diagnostics, asking sharp, well-framed questions rather than expecting board-level troubleshooting in return.

What You'll Do

Diagnostics & Root Cause Analysis (the core of the role)

  • Triage incoming CALIFIA units, reproduce reported failures, and run structured diagnostics to localize the fault.
  • Determine whether a problem is a hardware fault, a software/firmware fault, or a communication/integration issue between the control electronics and the LabVIEW application – and confirm which, with evidence rather than guesswork.
  • Perform root cause analysis on recurring and high-impact failures, and capture findings in a form the team can act on

Hardware Service & Repair

  • Bench-test and troubleshoot control boards/PCBAs, sensors (pressure, flow, level, temperature), valves, pumps, wiring harnesses, and connectors.
  • Use standard lab instrumentation – digital multimeter, oscilloscope, bench power supply, function generator – to trace signals, verify power, and characterize components against expected behavior.
  • Make board-level vs. component-level repair/replace decisions, perform or coordinate repairs, and verify each unit before it ships back

Documentation & Remote Communication

  • Produce clear, consistent records of diagnostics, findings, repairs, and parts usage – written for a reader who is not in the room.
  • Keep the off-site Operations Manager informed with proactive, structured status updates and well-defined parts and supply requests.
  • Participate in the weekly service/ticketing review (HubSpot) and use ticket data to surface recurring issues and process gaps.

Knowledge Transfer & Process Enablement

  • Establish repeatable intake, triage, diagnostic, repair, and verification procedures, replacing today’s informal approach.
  • Train and mentor internal staff in repair and diagnostic techniques.
  • Build the troubleshooting guides and reference documentation that allow that capability to stick.

What Success Looks Like

  • CALIFIA repair backlog substantially resolved; repairs completed in less than 1 week
  • No gaps in parts availability; all parts stocked and ready for use
  • Repair procedures documented and repeatable; staff trained independently

What You Bring (Required)

  • Mid-level hands-on experience (3-6 years) troubleshooting integrated hardware-and-software systems
  • Demonstrated ability to isolate faults across hardware/software/communication boundaries
  • Practical electronics troubleshooting: PCBs, sensors, valves/actuators, wiring using DMMs and oscilloscopes
  • Strong documentation and communication habits for remote stakeholders
  • Process mindset and patience to teach and establish procedures
  • Able to work on-site, largely self-directed in a growth-stage environment

Preferred Experience

  • National Instruments ecosystem: LabVIEW, CompactRIO/sbRIO, TestStand, DAQmx
  • Test fixtures, test interfaces, or automated test equipment experience
  • Regulated/quality-driven medical-device environment with traceability focus
  • Fluidic/pneumatic or motion-control systems: pumps, valves, pressure/flow sensing
  • Creating procedures, troubleshooting guides, or training materials
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus for global support

Engagement Details

  • Temporary, project-based position (W-2, hourly)
  • On-site at Service & Repair Depot, Poway, CA
  • Hours flex with service volume and milestones
  • Full-time potential based on operational needs
